Today’s topic is business. Again, a little too vague with a lot of crossover with tomorrow’s topic which is work. Maybe for today we cover types of businesses I’m interested in and why. Try to see if there are any threads that tie them together. This I’m sure will spill into my current opinions on work and what I want to do next, but I will try to save most of that for tomorrow. Ok, I have a couple ideas, let’s see how this goes.

The Information Superhighway
Today’s topic is web. That’s a little vague so I am going to clarify and focus a little more on what I do on the web, what I like and don’t like, and the areas that are most interesting to me personally. I am going to include apps in addition to a web browser for our purposes. That clarification did not make me feel very confident about today’s entry. Let’s see what happens.
Where Do You Get Your Information?
I try to keep tabs on what I’m reading, watching, and listening to because I know that those inputs have a pretty significant impact on my perspective. I want to make sure I am getting enough variety where I don’t become a blowhard ideologue, in any direction. I have no idea where I just pulled that terminology btw. That’s the point – I no longer am under the illusion that I am the original source of any of my thoughts. They are bubbling up all the time, coming from who knows where, but I am assuming from memories and information I have gathered from external sources, like books, newspapers, magazines, etc. So I try to keep track, and to the extent that I can, sample a lot of different options.
What Matters?
Here I am about to not take my own advice – I was supposed to allocate ten minutes at the start of the session to gather my thoughts and draw out a quick outline for the entry, but I’m ready to jump right in so here we go.
What Did You Do Today?
Today’s topic is time allocation. Over the last few years, I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I do with my time. Also, what I should be doing with my time.
Self-Assessment
Today I’m going to try a self-assessment. Where do I stand? The good, the bad, and the ugly. I am not sure what the best frame is – current me versus 10 years ago me, current me versus the top ten middle managers in the video game industry, etc – or if any frame at all is really necessary. One thing I am realizing, just four days into this writing journey, is that maybe I should not jump write in, perhaps I should formally allocate my hour. Please bear with the detour here. Here’s an example
Personality Traits – What Does It Mean?
I was and continue to be interested in how much of our destiny we have control over. I’ve done some reading on genetics, neuroscience, and a little less on social science to get a little perspective, but I am far, far from being an expert and having and any strongly held beliefs. I have also taken a couple different types of personality tests to give an indication of what I’m working with on the inherent traits side. I understand there are limitations and strong reasons not to get too attached to your classification. Although I would not put these tests in the same category as tarot cards or astrology, I think that’s good advice.
My Life – 1 Hour Autobiography
I’m going to stick with the outline of topics I put together yesterday. That means today I am going to try and write a bio of life to date in an hour.
What’s The Point of This Again?
I need to remind myself of the goals of this project, or I fear that it will turn into a free for all. Not to say that it wouldn’t be compelling content, but there would be no theme or organizing principle. I realized this yesterday, and earlier this morning when I was thinking about what I should write about today. It’s Day 2 and I am already starting to get nervous about having nothing to say – uh-oh! But, if I create an outline and schedule, I am hopeful that this anxiety will fade. There are obviously many, many things I can ramble on about, I just want to make sure I am picking the right ones. So to begin today, I want to reiterate (to myself) why I’m doing this. Apologies for this section being a little redundant for those of you who read my post yesterday.
Why Not Today?
I’ve wanted to write for public consumption for a while now. A few fits and starts. I’ve bought a few different personal urls with this goal in mind over the years, and have one live now. If you’re reading this, you found the site!
